It has been a very long time since I posted anything here.
That probably isn't changing. I don't expect The Only New Thing to suddenly spring back to life, and I'm not going to make any promises about posting more often because history suggests that would be a lie.
But I have started doing something else that I figured was worth mentioning here.
Earlier this year, I started a podcast called Nashville Sports Report.
On the surface, it is a Nashville sports podcast. I talk about the Titans, Predators, Nashville SC, Vanderbilt, the Sounds and the other teams around town. But as I've gotten further into it, I've realized that the part I enjoy most isn't necessarily talking about who won or lost. It's talking to people about all the other stuff that exists around sports.
I've interviewed a sports photographer about how she anticipates a shot. I've talked to a commercial real estate professional about how you would actually find and assemble enough land for a Major League Baseball stadium. I've talked to a police officer about how Metro moves thousands of cars away from sporting events. I've talked to a chef about restaurants and sports in Nashville, a musician about interacting with visiting fans on Lower Broadway, and people who remember Nashville sports from decades before I do.
I've also gotten to talk to coaches, broadcasters and people who work inside the teams themselves.
In retrospect, this probably isn't that far removed from what I used to enjoy about writing this blog. I still like finding some weird thread, pulling on it and seeing where it goes. The subject matter is just more focused now.
One of my favorite conversations so far was with Jay Grider, who spent decades with the Nashville Sports Council and had a front-row seat as Nashville went from a city without major professional sports to the city we have now.
I also spoke with JJ Rosen, a lifelong Nashvillian whose grandfather, Ralph Kornman, wrote sports for Nashville newspapers years ago. Our conversation wandered through old Vanderbilt basketball, youth hockey at Municipal Auditorium in the 1970s, Greer Stadium and what it was like growing up as a sports fan in a very different Nashville.
There are plenty of other conversations in the archive, and hopefully a lot more to come.
If any of that sounds interesting, the show is at NashvilleSportsReport.com.
And, since this is The Only New Thing, I should probably mention that I have not completely stopped going down historical rabbit holes either. I have also been working for quite a while on the French family photo album full of unidentified people, photographers, locations, dates and little clues that have slowly started to connect to each other. I'll post more about that if/when there is a major breakthrough.
So no, this is not a grand relaunch of the blog. More like a brief proof of life.
If you somehow arrived at this post because you've been checking The Only New Thing for an update all these years, I am both impressed by and slightly concerned about your persistence.
